Contacting your Insurer & Potential Reimbursment

How can I receive reimbursemnet if my insurance was denied by TLN or Wildflower.
Many insurance plans include lactation and infant-feeding support with an IBCLC, but each plan is different. Below are key questions you can ask your provider (before your consult) to clarify your coverage. If your plan doesn’t list me as in-network. I’ll provide a usable “superbill” so you can seek reimbursement. (see further for more details on superbills)

Contacting your Insurer: Ask the representative the following

  • I’d like to verify coverage for lactation and infant-feeding support with an out-of-network lactation consultant (IBCLC).
  • If your insurer has no in-network lactation consultants that provide one-on-one care, you may request preauthorization for your lactation consults. This may be expedited
  • Is a referral or pre-authorization required for lactation care or feeding support?
  • Are both in-home and telehealth visits covered?
  • How many visits are included per pregnancy or per year?
  • What are the copay, deductible, or coinsurance amounts am I’m responsible for?
  • Which procedure codes does my plan recognize for lactation support (typical procedure codes for lactation care are S9443, 99404 with diagnosis code z39.1 )?
  • What is the fax number or address to submit superbills for direct reimbursement?
  • Is their any additional forms that need to be submitted for reimbursment?
Obtain the repensentives name, case number, authorization number, and request that a written confirmation be sent to you.

Potential Reimbursement with a Superbill
If I am not in-network with your plan, I’ll provide this for you. With the superbill you can submit it directly to your insurer for potential reimbursement.

  • First, attend your consult (in-home or virtual).
  • After payment, I provide a superbill with all required details.
  • You submit it to your insurance company (online, mail or fax) using your plan’s “out-of-network provider reimbursement” process.
  • Keep your receipt, plan ID, and notes from your call for your records, they’ll help if there’s a follow-up.

I am happy to assist with any additional questions or support with checking your coverage.

EOB (Estimate of Benefits)

Your insurer will send an Estimate of Benefits letter after your consultations have been submitted for insurance reimbursement

  • Please note, this is not a bill & no action is required of you.
